POLICE COURT. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 3 January 1914

POLICE COURT. Att the Heidelberg Police Court on Monday morning, 22nd ult., Mr Thos. Ford (chairman) and Dr. H. K. King, J's.P., heard a case, in which Constable Harrison, of Ivanhoe, proceeded against Charles William Jenkins that he did at Melbourne during the month of Novem ber unlawfully sell to George Lewis Holland, a person under the age of 18 years, a pea rifle. The constable stated that when he took possession of the rifle Holland said he bought it from the defendant. The latter admitted selling it, and did not think he was doing any harm. Senior-Constable Moylan, who prosecuted, asked for only a nominal fine. Defendant had been very straight forward, and it was a new act, which had only come into operation on the 1st January that year. Mr Ford said that under the circumstances, and the act be ing a new one and not widely known by the public, they were inclined to be very lenient, and would finue him 2/6. Answers to Queries on "Good Judgment." [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 3 January 1914

Aiiswrs to ueries on "Good - Judgment." "Must a farmer be a thoroughly educated man to have good judg ment?" No. "What is good judgment and in what does it consistt" It is the faculty of grasping condi tions as they exist that enables a per son to avoid the unfavorable ones that are beyond control and take ad vantage of the favorable ones. "Do you measure it solely by the fact of making money on the farm?" No. "Why is it that we often see a well educated man of good intellect who seeminely cannot succeed as a dairy farmer?" He is undoubtedly bearing the bur den of too much scholastic training and too little practical sense. If the writer could express his bitterness on this subject it would dissolve the point of his pen, as at 23 years. of age he took up scientific agriculture with all. the poor judgment and en thusiasm of which youth is capable. and in just a few years he had this farm in such a condition that it would not produce a crop of even weeds-heavy enough to hide a rabbit....
