A Word with the Farmers. PROTECTION, A NECESSITY. [Newspaper Article] — Molong Express and Western District Advertiser — 16 September 1893

, A 'Word ?vTith f-he Farmers. PROTECTION, A NECESSITY. To the Editor: Sir, — Many of my old friends in Mnloug and the district write me that Free 'Trade is mysterionsly strengthening in the conntitufM\cy. The -i leason of thin unnatural perversion ia '. - , said to be the failure of the present tariff to stimulate industry. Th« freetraders are very anxious just now to IhV'pI the abor tive CiMtotns 'Duties' Act, .'?' Pr6f.«»ctioTt.' But it is no more a meaHure of protection ' than a wax. image ia a human being or a ceatepede a FIN de sieclr invention. The See Tariff is simply an aajirravHted form of Free Trade. I have just tjlanced over the schedule of duties under the revised tariff and have been unable to detect any items , 'which would tend to nourish and sustain any industry other than, agriculture. Indeed, the metigre measure of Protection vouchsafed the farmer is repieaented by an ;- impost of lOd in the IOOIiih on all imported cereals. On the principle thi\t half a loaf is be...

Molong Social Club Ball. w ? — . . Of all the pleasant social gatherings that have, taken place in Molong this year, the one held int the School of Arta on Wednesday evening .last eclipsed the whole lot. The ball on Wednesday was a fitting finale for bucIi a successful season as the club has experienced. ' Every thing iu connection with it. was carried out on a most elaborate scale, and it must be gratifying to the management to find that their efforts were so ably jeoonded by friends of the members of tho club.
