The Gippsland Times. WEDNESDAY AUGUST 14, 1861. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 14 August 1861

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 14, 1861. ELECTORS of North Gippsland, In the   excitement of the moment, and in the   desire to return your man, whoever he may be, do not let the great object you have in view be lost in teh ardency of your canvass, and let the golden oppor- tunity slip of exacting from your can- didates a promise to support certain local improvements which are so much tequired or tho fell development of the vast resources of Gippsland. We may be considered prejudiced in our views and limited in our ideas, because we require that our local policy should le made of paramount interest in the elec- tion of a number of the House of As sembly for North Gippsland; but we would appear at the first glance; and that we argue from the fact that we believe the welfare and progressive ness of Gippsland has more to do with the general improvemont of the condition of the people of Victoria, than any ab struse question of legislative craft which may now be made an alemb...

ELECTION MEETINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 14 August 1861

ELECTION MEETING   A meetiing of the electors of Bairns dale and neighbourhood was held on Wednesday evening at the Mitchell Hotel, for the purpose of hearing an address from Mr. John Johnson, late member for the district of North Gipps- land, and a candidate for the Legislative Assembly. The meeting was well at- tended. Mr. Dreverman was voted to the chair, and briefly requested a fair hearing for the candidate. Mr. Johnson was well received. He said this was the third time he appeared before the electors of North Gippsland, as a candidate for the Legislative As   sembly, and he would take the oppor-   tunity to state his views on the prin- ciple topics of the day, and give an acount of what he had done for the district when he was their representa- tive in the Assembly. He was in favor if a revision of the land bill, in favor of cultivation licences being granted near the diggings, but opposed to free selection before survey. He would sup- po...

FACETILE. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 14 August 1861

FACETIAE. A writer says that "fathers, remembering their own boyhood, should make some little allowance for their children." But the trouble is that many of our children, after spending their "allowance," go in debt for double the amount. "'Does my son William, that's a soldier in the army, get plenty to eat?" asked an old lady of a recruiting sergeant, the other day. "He sees plenty," was the laconic reply. "Bless his heart, then, I know he'll have it if he can see it; he always would at home." JUVENILE CURIOSITY.- "Won't you cut open a penny for me, father?" said a little girl, when she came home from school one day. "Cut open a penny ! What do you want me to do that for ?" asked her father. "'Cause," said the little girl, "our teacher says that in every penny there are four farthings, and I want to see them."

LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 14 August 1861

LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.             SERIOUS ACCIDENT.—On Monday night the 3rd inst., as Mr. Donald McIntosh was proceed- ing home to to the Green Hills accompanied by several other gentlemen who had been attend- ing an election meeting at Sale, his horse came in contact with a tree which stands al- most in the centre of the Boisdale road, be- tween the parsonage and Grassdale . The horse fell from the effects of the concussion and has since died; but more melancholy to relate, Mr. McIntosh has had his leg broken and has received other serious contussions. He now lies in a very precarious state, at Mr. Bennison's of Myrtle Grove, attended by Drs. Peck and McAlister. REQUISITION TO MR. FOSTER.—We have been informed by Mr. Bennison that he neither himself, nor by any authority given by him, signed any requisition to Mr. William Foster to stand as candidate for North Gipps- land district, and which requisition was...
