THE SATIRIST. [Newspaper Article] — Fitzroy City Press — 16 July 1881

THE SATIRIST. Satire should, like a polished razor, keen, Wound with A Sugg's patent lamp is supposed to be equal to six or seven of the ordinary gas lamps now in use ; but situated in a large open space, such as that chosen between   Brunswick Street and the tank reserve, where the reflectors have room to diffuse the light to the utmost limit, a Sugg should be equal       to double that number, because it would take at least twelve ordinary gas lamps to give an equal distribution and quality of light, or   illumine the same area with equal effective-   ness. The introduction of the Sugg, should they ever have the chance of becoming uni-     versal before the maturity of the electric light, must be a boon, and, I imagine, a great saving. This is how I work it, and I am much astonished that municipal wiseacres   have not before hit off some improvement on &nbsp...

CARLTON COURT. WEDNESDAY, JULY 13th (Before Messrs. Craven, Gunn, McMurtrie, Levens, and Lewes, J's.P.) A DISGUSTING CASE. [Newspaper Article] — Fitzroy City Press — 16 July 1881

CARLTON COURT. WEDNESDAY, JULY 13th. (Before Messrs. Craven, Gunn, McMurtrie,   Levens, and Lewes, J's.P.) A DISGUSTING CASE. Anne Hogan v. James Hogan.--This was a claim for maintenance, Mr. Frank Stephen appeared for the complainant, and Mr. Leon ard for the defence. Before any evidence was given Mr. Leonard raised the objection that the case had been heard at the Disitrict Court, Melbourne, and had been dismissed. He handed in a certificate to that effect. Mr. Stephens contended that a dismissal was not any hindrance to fresh proceedings. When the case was before the District Court his client was taken by surprise, and did not know what to do. She was charged with adultery, and was not then prepared with evidence to refute that charge. She was now in a position to do so, and as the denfendant resided in Carlton, he (Mr. Stephen) had ad- vised his client to bring the action in the Carlton Court. The defendant was a gas fitter, and the owner of two or three houses, and...

THE FITZROY CITY PRESS. SATURDAY, JULY 16. [Newspaper Article] — Fitzroy City Press — 16 July 1881

THE FITZROY CITY PRESS. SATURDAY, JULY 16. In reforming or distroying all institu tion, whether it be a system of Govern tment or a systeml of religion, it is gene rally found that manoy things in the of fending institutions, which lthe reform ers would gladly preserve, are altoge ther lost, just as a foundering vessel drowns good and lad alike. The great refornlm easure of fifty years ago is not a bad illustmraidoi of our meaning. While removing much that was objec tionable and inde:fensilble in the repre sentation or misrepresentation of the English people, it by no means stoppeds uthere. For it is a matter of history ohat, notwithstanding all the abuses of ire-reform times-the rotten ioroughs f thle aristocracy, and the open and iameless corruption of the constitu ~cies, there has been a marked falling in tile ability and in, the eloquence o Itatesmen since the law of 1832 was p ed on the Statute Book. As the b of representation widenledi, the ssndid oratory of Burke, Sheridan, n...
