ASSASSINATION OF PHESIDENT L I N C O L X , ATTKMl'TliD ASSASSINATION OF Mb. SEWARD. On April 15th, at 9.30 p.m., President Lincoln, while sitting in a private box at Ford's Theatre, Washington, with Mrs. Lincoln, Mrs. Harris, ami Major llitliburn, was sliot by an assassin, who suddenly entered the box and approached from behind the President. The assassin then leaped upon tlie Ktage, t>rjnnlinhing a- large knife, exclaim ing, "Sic semper tyrianus," and escaped ait the rear of the theatre. GARDENERS CALENDAR FOR JULY. Seakale and a few plants ' rhubarb may be covered with pots or casks for blanching, which is effected by heaping up around the pots, fermenting stable manure- Use discre tion in sowing carrots, parsnips, salad, &c., just as the month is• favorable or not. Of pear, broad beans, kale,   spinach, cabbage, and cauliflower, sow a medium crop. This is the month for prunning most fruit trees. Water should not be permitted to rest about bulbs. During wet weather it is labor lost to attempt the digging of clayey soils. Tie up crysanthemums that are of straggling growth.

(TO THE EDITOR OF THE "BEGA GAZETTE.")         Sir.--As the nine days wonder caused by the dismissal of Constable Allen, and the breeches case has passed away, allow one who was neither a witness in the one, nor had anything to do with the meeting or petition of the other, to say a few words about them. First comes the breeches case : It is not intended here   to enter into an argument as to whether Complainant's or Defendant's witnesses were guilty of perjury —one thing, however, is plain, that the Bench did wrong in dismissing that case ; it was their bounden duty to have sent it to a jury. It. is most distinctly laid down, that in any case, where the duty of a magistrate is ministerial and not ju dicial, as in this case, that where the evidence is conflicting and evenly balanced, he shall commit the defendant   for trial, and leave It for a jury to decide which party speaks the truth.
