Dr. Talmage on Alcoholism. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 3 October 1888

Dr. Talmage on Alcoholism. 1 indict this evil as the regicide, the frat ricide, the patricide, the matricide, exoricide of the century. Yet under what innocent and delusive and mirthful names alcoholism deceives the people ! It is a ' cordial.' It an ' appetiser.' It is a ' digester.' It is an ' invigoratar.' It is a settler,' It is a ' nightcap.' Why don't they put on th« right labels — ' Essence of perdition,' ' Con science stupifier,' ' Five drachms of heart ache,' ' Tears of orphanage,' ' Blood of souls,' ' Scabs of an eternal leprosy,' ' Venom of the worm that never die*'1 Only once in » while is there anything in the title of liquors to even hint their atrocity, sb in the case of ' sour mash,' That I see advertised all over. It is an honest nam«, and anyone can understand it. 'Sour mash!' That is, it makes a man's disposition sour, and his associations sour, and his prospect* sour; and then it-is good to mashlis body, and mash his soul, and mash Eis 'business, and mash his fam...
