I have a notion that he will be found to be the right man in tho right place. He has, of course, a good deal to learn tn respect of the wants of -tho colony ho is called upon to give, but I do not doubt that he will largely assist to develope its resources, and to the utmost of his power seek to allay tho political differences which, according to some very excellent autho- rities, have their only solution in separa- tion.. The speech of Sir JameB Martin, at the banquet given at Sydney, in honour of the Marquis, has been much relished here. THEY tell of a man out West whose hair is so red that he has to wear fly-nets over his head to keep the candle-moths from flying in. A BROOKLYN mother advised her daughter to oil her hair, and fainted flat when that candid damsel replied, " Oh, no, ma ; it spoils the gentlemen,a vests !" THE young men at the American watering places have discarded white vests. The young ladies use so much oil on their hair that a vest is only good for one evening on the piazza. " HAVE you seen my black faced antelope ?" inquired the keeper of a menagerie. "No" said the visitor; "whom did your black-faced aunt elope with?"       A BOOTED SORROW--The toothache. WOMAN—She spoiled us with an apple, but atoned for the wrong by forming a " pair." WHY is buttermilk like something which never happened? Because it hasn't a curd (occurred). ' SAID a fashionable lady, whose husband had stolen up and gave her a hearty and loving kiss —Sir, I consider such actions are out o...

THE RUSH CDT OF THE ABUT.-Under the above startling heading a contemporary says : " We hear that officers have Sent in their papera by hundreds and hundreds. In one cavalry regiment one major and six captains and several subalterns Beek to retire. Tho Dublin Brigade Office is reported to have had 400 applications to retire, and ne are afraid to mention the number reported to have been received at head- quarters. There is, indeed, ' an ugly rush1 to get out of the army. The new regulation as regards adjutanciee of reserve forces will shortly remove some eight or nine officers of artillery to the supernumerary List. It is intended to elect a considerable reduction in the half-pay liât, and a large number of the captains whose names appear in the closely-packed columns, occupying pages 149, ISO, snd 151 of the Army Litt, are, during the next few month!, to hare the chance of full-pay emolument." THE magistrates on the roster (or to-morrow are Messrs. Paterson and Bundle. THE mail coach carries to and from Gains- ford and Clermont, will involve a change io the postal arrangements on that line of road. At present, as is well known, the communication is twice a week. On and after the 1st February | it will be only onoe a week, the Peak Downe \ people oonaidering that the advantage of a coach will more than counterbalance the drawback of baring only one mail each week. So doubt in this respect they are right, but next year they should petition for a one-horse mail per week to alternate with the coach mtil. At a time when daily telegrams from Europo are hourly expected it doea look like retrogres- sion to rcrert back to a weekly mail, but a mail coach hus become eo great a necessity to the Peak Downs people tbat they cannot bo blamed for making a aacrificc to obtain it.
