THE ACHERON MAILS. (To the Editor of the Standard). [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 July 1877

THE ACHERON MAILS. (7o'the Editor of the Staadard). 8mn,-Wll you allow me through the columns of your journal to draw Ettention to the defective postal arrangements existing for, the Acheron and Buxton distrlet. At present, and indeed for a very long time past, we have only one mail a week, which, to say the least, is totally inadequate to the requirements of the popul;tion. Business men, farmers, and others cannot wait so long for.their correspondence, and are therefore compelled to srnd either to Alexandra or Maryaville. and during the present season over almost impassable roads, which resulto in considerable loss of time. Surely we are entitled to more consideration than this. The mail carrier at present only brings the mails from Alexandra on Wednesday, but he has to go from Marysville to Alexandra every Saturday, when with a trifling amount of trouble lie could bring a mail. For my own part I think that a rising and populous locality like this should have three mails weekly ; b...

PUBLIC MEETING AT GOBUR. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 July 1877

PUBLIC MEETING AT GOBUR. A publio meeooing was bold on Saturday last, at O'Callaghan's hotel, to consider the resolutions passed at the last meeting of the Shire Council, in reference to the new scale of commons' fees. The meeting voted our leading storekeeper, Mr Burns, to the chair. Councillors Whiting and Lade and other gentlemen addressed the meeting at considerable length in terms con demnatory of the new scale of fees to be charged. After much speechifying the following resolutions were carried unanimously : 1. That the resolution passed by the Alexandra Shire Council, appointing fees to be henceforth charged for depasturing cattle on the Gobur common, which are excessive, unoalled for, and unjust. 2. That owing to mismanagement the rights of all parties entitled to depasture stock on the Gobur common are being neglected and trifled with. 8. 'flhat a memorial be prepared, embodying the above resolutions, and forwarded to the Minister of Lands, asking him to refuse his sanction...

According to a Russian despatch, the Russians occupied Biela on the 5th inst. According to a Turkish despatch, MIukhtar Pasha has restored communi cation with Kars. Russian unofficial accounts ascribe the Russian retreat in Armenia to the number of the Turkish forces having been underrated, and also to the operating columns being inadequate for the purposes of attack. It is believed that Abdul Kerim Pasha will act on the defensivo in the fortresses in the vicinity of the Balkans. July 11. Muhktar Pshal has effected a junc tion with the garrison at Kars. The left wing of the Russian army in Asia has recrossed the frontier. - A Rlusaian division south of the Danube is marching upon Selvi and Plevna. CHAPTER II. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 July 1877

CHAPTER 11. "Her keel hath struck on a hidden rock; Her planks are torn asunder; And down come her masts with a reeling shock, And a hideous crash like thunder. Wallings around and overhead. Brave spirits stupefied or (lead, And madness and despairl"-- Wilson. About seven o'clock on the evening of the day following that on which I had overheard the conversation between Lionel Riverford anit his wife, a fog so dense set in that the officers were prevented taking observations, Speed was reduced, and every available pre caution taken to secure safety, a sharp look-out being kept for some of the lighthouses. It was afterwards nascer tained that the log-bell had been set ringing, but the strong breeze that was blowing, combined with the excitement on board, prevented the officers from hearing it. The captain issued orders to take in sail and set the whistle blowing, and up to two o'clock in the morning nothing calamitous occurred. The first grey streak of dawn was visible in the east whe...

MELBOURNE LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 July 1877

The " Great Liberal Party" are still resting upon their oars, and the bursting-up process has not even been commenced, so that tihe squatters in your district, if any of that iniquitous class are allowed to reside there, can breathe freely for the present. So far, the G.L P. have been hotter occupied in providing for the necessities of its deserving members, for in addition to the Pearson episode, Mr James, the representative of JBallarat uast, has been appointed Chairman of Committees, 'sad Mr Mirams, the beloved of the Reform League, has been offered the lucrative if not honorable post of " whip." and Mr Stitt Jenkins, the Geelonmeso poet and patriot, has beeon appointed private secretary to the Premtier himself. Mr Miriama, however, seems to covet honor ns well its lucre, and demands that the position which Ie has been selected to fill saluld be combined with a portfolio without offceo, and the Cabinet as a body are said to l...

GOBUR. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 July 1877

GOBU?t. There Is little of interest to the general reader to chronicle here just now. That Gobur has improved and is steadily improving is evinced by every house in the township being now oo onpied, whereas a few months ago many were untenanted. The usual fortnightly quadrille as sembly was held on Thursday last, and it passed off most enjoyably, over 20 couples being present. A great deal of eagerness was shown to see our new local paper on Saturday morning last, the moribund TimeR being incorporated with the Standard ; and the mail arriving without bringing the successor of the Alexandra limas caused much disappointment. We hope the proprietor of the now journal will see the advisability of regularly forwarding the paper with Saturday's mail. Judging from the first issue our new local organ is going to be a publication of no mean pretensions. Its literary and moral excellence will re flect credit on the district. To say that it will compare favorably with its pro decessor is to sp...

AGRICULTURAL NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 July 1877

AGRICULTURAL NOTES. Our Acheron and Whanregarwen corres pondent writes:-From what I have seen throughout the district wheat, which is already up, appears to be strong and healthy, though one cannot as yet form an idea of what it is likely to be before the end of winter. Should the present fine weather con tinue without very heavy frosts, it will do a world of good to all kinds of growing crops. Oats are little more than barely above ground; not nearly so much has been sown this year aslast. Farmers are beginning to find out that it does not pay, after deducting the ex penses of reaping, threshing, and carting, to sell oats at 2s Gd per bushel, and consequently they either lay down the ground with Eng lish grass seeds or sow a greater quantity of wheat. The prolonged drought, followed by such a heavy downpour of rain as we had at the beginning of winter, almost ruined the grass; cattle, therefore, have not thriven so well as could have been wished. The season has proved so extremely ...

iqxandita & (ea tfairdard PUII|8H ,D EVERY SATURDAY **iExcELKLOKS. " SATURDAY, 14TwI JULY, 1877. TarE time when it will be necessary for the ratepayers to either re-affirm their confidence in three of their present representatives, or select others to fill their places, has now almost arrived, and we need scarcely dwell upon the importance of the occasion to all who value our local governing institutions, and the medium which they afford for promoting the interests and advancing tbhe prosperity of the district. In one sense our municipal bodies occupy a more important position than that of the central Legislature, inasmuch as they are endowed with functions and entrusted with responsibilities, the proper discharge of which affect the comfort, safety, and welfare of the entire population. It is, therefore, essentially necessary, in order to derive tho benefit from their existence which they are capable of yielding, that they should be maintained in the highese state of effici...

YEA. (PROM OUR OWN cOnnESPONDENT.) 10th July. On Friday night a drunken man, in a fit of bravado broke the window of the Commercial hotel. Mr Oliver promptly handed him over to the police, and when brought before Dlr Ker, J.P., he was fineo £2, with £15 damages; in default three months' im prisonment-a lesson that will teach him to look upon glass with care Im future. The fine was subsequently paid by Messrs McNeil and Purcell. The worst feature of the case, from an Englishman's point of view, is that lhe was kept in the lock-up four days with. out a hearing. The Shire Council have authorised Mr Small to prepare a petition, praying for the Upper Goulburn Railway from Tullarook to Yea. The mines at the Ten-tree are look, ing exceoedingly well. COMMERCIAL PRODUCE MARKET. MELBOURNE, Friday.   In the open market, breadstuffs have re- sumed that uncertain position occupied last week. Privately holders quote L15 15s for parcels, but there is very little doing. For wheat, 7s 5¼d was obtained at auction for 67 bags of prime, but for larger parcels 7s 4d appeared to be the best price the trade was disposed to give. Feeding grains are fairly active. Oats sold at 3s 10¼d to 3s 11d. Black oats realised 3s 6d at auction.
