THE HORSE MARKET . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 1 January 1902

THE HORSE MARKET . , . Conditions Unchanged Since Yesterday . More Country Buyers . INCREASED RECEIPTS TODAY . Prices Nominally Steady but no Choice Arrivals . There was no particular change in the horse markot today , except perhaps that the fact of its being a holiday thinned the ranks of the buyers a trifle . Nothing fancy was offered during the early market , but no trouble was experienced in disposing of all the offerings at fairly steady prices . The bulk of the run was plain and medium chunks and drafters . At the auction the range for heavy horses ran from 885 ( 3165 , with nothing really choice . Chunks were free sellers at nominally steady prices and a slight Improvement in the demand for farm stuff was notable at prices ranging from f 75 @ 125 . Drivers were rather scarce and most of the offerings on the plain order . While bidding was possibly a little less animated than yesterday prices ruled about steady . An improvement in the quality of the offerings this afternoon e...

What your Neighbors Are 'Doing . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 1 January 1902

What your Neighbors Are Doing . HNE-TEXTII the population of the middle , northern and southern west lives in jjrofouncl ignorance of what the other nine-tenths are doing . Metropolitan journalism expends its energies in a daily category of urban crime , scandal and other sensational occurrence and fiction . This noxious dose is imposed on the agrarian constituency of the daily press until it has palled on the taste . In that interesting column of the Live Stock World bearing the caption Little Letters much information is dissem inated respecting conditions in various sections of the live stock producing portion of the United States and frequent commendation has inspired the management to detail a meniDer of the staff to perambulating effort . A recent junket into northern Iowa , South Dakota and Minnesota has enabled our readers to obtain an idea of present conditions in those states , prospects for live stoek development and progress made during the past few years . Equally intere...

Gony yorricKs Thilosophjr . Ihll tnere 1 S no Philosophy in shedding ~~ Ilk !! scalding , salty tears of remorse over the short-comings of the past . You will find grief enough as you toddle along toward the final destiny of things earthly without digging it out of the musty pages of the has been . History was not made * to move unborn generations to sackcloth and ashes . If such were the case it would be just as well to ring down the curtain on the past and nail the old thing down tight . •Very few of us are willing to tell all we know , and we would wipe a few things off the map of the past if we could , but we cant ; so the thing to do is to cheer up , remember the mistakes of the past and steer clear of the same blunders in the future . Aim high , and if you do undershoot a little you will be all right , If you aim low there is not much chance that you will overshoot the mark . A rollicking relic of old decency said the other day , Dont give us so much of the past ; lift the vei...

Ltt ) e Stocfi Area Moving / forth . FiFxn COHHBSVOS HENCE or THE LIVE STOCK WOULD . St . Paul , Minn ., December 30 th . —Minnesota is proud of its live stock census and elated over the fact that It Is now in the corn belt . Once a wheat growing state necessity forced her farmers into dairying . Through the milk pall tbey emerged from hardship to comparative affluence earning the title , bread- and butter state for Minnesota . But King Corn has crossed tbe Iowa line and established his northern outposts in the tted River valley . In the fat lands of southern Minnesota he rules supreme . King wheat has been dethroned ; his camp follower the deadly chinch bug having hastened his downfall . With corn have come the beef steer and the hog , wealth producers and fertility restorers . So unpopular Is wheat in southern Minnesota today that Dont-raisc-wheat clubs are being organized , farmers signing mutual agreements not to plant that cereal . Grass and corn are to be the staple crops here...

Summary of Annual Review [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 1 January 1902

Summary of Annual Review IN THE live stock trade , as In other things earthly , it has been said that history repeats Itself . It is frequently said of market conditions : This Is a repetition of what we had a year ago ; we get it every year at this time . If the . market for a pretty good class of beef cattle becomes low and stagnant along In October , traders . are wont to say : This 1 s nothing new , we get just this condition every year when the rangers get to coming thick . Other branches of the trade receive similar continent . It Is part of the universal economy of things , it is history repeating itself and it often occurs that the man in the country , the man with the hoe , the producer , orlglrial seller and the shipper would save himself from loss and disappointment if he would note current market conditions and compare them with conditions at the same seasons in previous years . The history of 1001 has been made and in the live stock trade It Is a most remarkable one—in ...
