If the . farm is of sufficient extent , so that cattlo can bo allowed to feed in pastures , these are very essential . We can personally endorse each and all of the advertisers whose names appear in this paper . THE Waco ( Texas ) Examiner is authority for the statement that bcoves are to be taken from Kansas to Texas . •* — CATTLE RAISING IN THE OLDER WESTERN STATES . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 25 September 1879

•* — CATTLE RAISING IN THE OLDER WESTERN STATES . As was stated when we took up this subject a few days ago , a great change has taken place within a decade in Illinois and states similarly situated , in raising cattle . In some counties , as Henry , ior instance , almost every , farmer at that time made the business a promirieiit feature of Ills operations . At present , however , by far tho greatest number have relinquished it andturned their attention to other departments of . husbandry , particularly to grain farming by reason of tho competition mot from the cheap- cattle of . the far west . But it does not necessarily iollow that a class of cattle cannot be raised : in these states which will yield a fair margin of profit . It is not , however , to common native stock that farmers will look to attain or realize this reasonable , expectation . The demand . for choice- cattle from this timo forward will be constant , and , we believe , must increase . Our . domestic markpts , ; a...

COLD STORES FOR FRESH MEAT . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 25 September 1879

COLD STORES FOR FRESH MEAT . The foreign traflic in fresh meat between this couutry and Europe has quickened the inventive faculties of men-on both hemispheres , but especially on this side of the Atlantic , nnd lciito diligent search for , methods and processes which shall render the business more secure by removing , probabilities or ; possibilities even , of loss from decay of these meats . Wo discover , in tho column s of some foreign journals , that cold stores are being established , which appear to meet the requirements of the case . GOVERNMENT INSPECTION OF THE - " •CATTLE TRADE . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 25 September 1879

GOVERNMENT INSPECTION OF THE - •CATTLE TRADE . Elsewhere we reproduce an article from the American Cultivator upon tlie subject of govern ^ , inent inspection and control ©! the cattle tradoj which is well worth a careful peiusal . Aside __ from its criticisms upon the tfeparttneut of agriculture at Washington , we endorse tho views of j i , oiir Boston cotemporary , and heartily second its . , suggestion for congress to create a national com- - j . mission of cattle sanitary inspection . The action of the several states , or the most of them nt least , will doubtless be tardy , and tho enforcement of any regulations adequate ia meet tho caso effectively , too loose and inefficient to satisfy the just demand of tho country for immunity from tho spread of the lung plague in cattle The place to seek for protection from the danger that jeopardizes the cattle interest of this conn- - try is the fountain-head of power , and if the grasshopper irruption , which was circumscribed in extent...

STANDARD OF THE AMERICAN JERSEY CATTLE CLUB . A letter has come to hand , written by a gen tleman interested ^ dairy matters to some ex tent , in which the writer takes exception ( and . we think very justly ) to the standard adopted by the American Jersey Cattle Club . AVe have not - that standardbeforc . us , but have examined it , hitherto , aud do not , therefore , speak of it altogether at random . CONTROLLING THE SEXES . ' [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 25 September 1879

CONTROLLING THE SEXES . D . D . FIQ- ; KT , of Houston , Texas , in a recent communication to the St . Louis Jourrud of Agriculture , gives an interesting account . of eight original experiments ; made by himself , in this matter , together with their results . He expects them to meet with incredulity because of their full and complete success , and because they overturn and disprove the latest 1 and perhaps most plausible theory as yet advanced by physiologists upon this subject . We adopt the following condensed report of those experiments from the Jersey . Bulletin of July last : Il by some unnatural circumstance cither of the sexes should become decimated , other things being equal , he supposes that nature would come to the rescue to re-establish tho proportions . He therefore tried to provoke for a time an artificial disturbance , a seeming disproportion between the sexes . He procured a herd or Jerseys , and on their arrival castrated a grade bull , which he hud been previous...

THE FALL FAIRS . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 25 September 1879

THE FALL FAIRS . . Tho season of the fall fairs is moro than half over , but as many of these annual exhibits of the rural and mechanical industry of the countiare now being or are to be hold , a word or two in regard to them is not out or place . From alt points comes tlie gratifying intelligence that these exhibitions are . well attended . Whatever may be the objections or srievn- cos , fancied or real , brought against them , it should bo remembered that such matters are only incidental to , and not a nccessary rcsult of , these exhibitions . The fact remains that the objects aiid purposes or the fairs are worthy of the sympathy and support or all who feel an interest in the progress of industries calculated to benefit the people . BEEF AND MUTTON IN AMERICA ' AND ENGLAND . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 25 September 1879

BEEF AND MUTTON IN AMERICA AND ENGLAND . Kentucky Live-stock Record . While there has been a falling off in prices In America in nearly all the range of agricultural products in the last few yearB , beef and mutton havo maintained theirs . •Since 1875 , when the exportation of them commenced to England , there has been no special change in values . The average export price of fresh beef since 1875 has been about 9 i £ cents the year through . It was tho past summer on tlie average one-half cent higher than in tlie summer of 1878 . But it is always •lower from the 1 st of May to October than in tho other or cooler and winter months from October 1 to May 1 . Thus , while the year litisboen for four years about 9 L £ cents , it goes down to 8 % , or a trifle less in mid-summer , and in July last was 8 7-10 . Yot in July , 1878 , it was 8 1-5 , a difference of half a cent in favor of 1879 . This - steadiness in prices of fresh beef , amid all tho depression in England for the last three...

Mmm [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 25 September 1879

Mmm SHEEP HUSBANDRY IN THE UNITED ., .,.. . , , STATES . . There is warrant for saying that this country is entering upon a new era in sheep husbandry which is fraught witli great promise for the future of that important industry—an era which will bring wealth and honor to intelligent and careful flock-masters , and . to the country at large , •¦ . : ¦ First there is tho assured demand for wool to meet the requirements of the manufacturers of woolen goods , or , rather , the consumption of such goods by the people . During the period of business depression through which tho country has passed , there was uuder-consumption of woolen fabrics . Thousands of people were not able to buy them , and to supply cheaper goods , the mills turned out a class of fabrics into whoso texture entered , more or less , cut-up rags . Shoddy goods were the rule , and straight woolen fabrics the exception . Now this is vastly changed . People will buy good goods if they are able to do so , knowing that t...
