THE BAU-AKADEMIE AT BERLIN . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1874

THE BAU-AKADEMIE AT BERLIN . BY N . C . R . The Bau-Akademie at Berlin is commonly , though erroneously , supposed to be purely a school of Architecture . The name , as defined by Lucas , signifies a school for the instruction of sculptors , painters and architects , and is in this case used to designate a Polytechnic school for architects and civil engineers . The location is excellent ; but a short distance south of the eastern end of the great street of Berlin , the famous "Under the Lindens," with its palaces , Academies of art , University , and beautiful private buildings , and numerous memorial statues and monuments . Diagonally across the river Spree , to the northeast , at a distance of nearly a quarter of a mile , is the royal museum , containing good collections of antique statues , plaster casts of those whose originals are still in Italy , oil paintings , cameos , coins , models of buildings , and art treasures of all kinds; the collections being especially rich in all ...

SKETCHES OP AMERICAN WORTHIES -- No . V . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1874

SKETCHES OF AMERICAN WORTHIES - No . V . BY A . W . EDWARD EVERETT , THE WORD-ARTIST . Having the advantages in youth of the best schools and the most intellectual society of New England , with the additional help in early manhood of foreign travel , instruction in the most famed Universities on the continent of Europe , and intercourse with men eminent for their learning and wisdom , all accompanied by assiduous and constant study , it is no wonder that the subject of this sketch became in the course of years to be counted as America s most finished literary orator . Possessing fine talents , which had received the most thorough and liberal culture , he early became eminent in widely different fields of intellectual labor . He filled the positions of College Professor and President , Editor , Congressman , Governor , Cabinet Minister and Diplomatist , and so far as the special duties of each were concerned , with almost equal fidelity and ability . He never became a leader in polit...

EVOLUTION AND PERMANENCE OP TYPE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1874

EVOLUTION AND PERMANENCE OP TYPE . BY T . J . B . The last literary effort of the late Professor Louis Agassiz of which we have any record is his article in the January Atlantic under the above heading . He was to have written other articles on the same subject for the same magazine , and we can but sincerely regret their loss , for with him is buried the rare power of interpretation he so eminently possessed , of the facts of nature in all their multiplicity and complexity , joined with their undoubted harmony and unity . Indeed , the number of facts bearing upon the absorbing question of the origin of living beings is so great and capable of so many combinations and permutations that it demands a long life of close application and clear conceptions to be able to express a well-grounded opinion upon the subject at all . Theorists may weave fancy sketches and jump at hasty conclusions , but patient , long-continued observation and careful classification can alone solve the intricate...

PROSPECTUS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1874

PROSPECTUS . THE ILLINI supersedes The Student , of which it is a continuation . From the encouraging experiences of the past in the publication of a paper at the Illinois Industrial University , and the growing necessity of a medium of communication with friends , the project has been formed of boldly attempting the establishment of a monthly journal of high merit , which shall fairly represent the University from which it eminates , as well as the state and progress of literature , science and human industry elsewhere . In thus entering upon a broader field , it is determined that the paper shall lose nothing of its former interest as a lively , cheerful , home journal . The Student will not be forgotten , nor buried in somber , pages of scholastic avoirdupois . The aim , in part , will be to make THE ILLINI reflect the every day life of the school ; it will bear upon its face the unmistakable evidence of its origin , and will seek the warmest and most cherished friendship of ever...

ADELPHIC'S SHRINE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1874

ADELPHICS SHRINE . [ Read by Mr . J . J . Crawley at the close of the dedication exercises held in the new hall of the Adelphic Society , Friday evening , Dec . 19 th , 1873 . ] I . Methinks I see a lofty height , enclothed in grandeur , armed with might , Which stretches forth its massive peaks , and to the world its wonder speaks , Its deep ravines bespeak of thought , far deeper than the world has wrought , Its towering heights the excellence that eer results from dilligence . II . Its craggy arms loom up in air the emblems of its missions fair , To glow the world with culture bright , to turn thought s darkness into light ; And on its summit laurels grow , which in the air their fragrance throw , As symbols of those brilliant stars , who gained their height through years of wars III . Aye ! there they stand in morning sun and gaze upon the race theyve run , E er beckoning to those below to come where brighter colors glow . And in that height a flame doth lie , which beams the po...

"MY DREAM . " [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1874

MY DREAM . I was studying an Ancient History lesson . Over and over again I had read an account of the Dorian Migration , and The Return of the Heraclidae . Such a mixed-up mess as Grecian History is . Is it fable or history ? Either , neither , both . Finally , I repeated aloud , The Dorians were led to the conquest of Peloponnesus by the Heraclidae , or descendants of the mighty hero , Hercules . Hence this migration is called The Return of the Heraclidae . ( Smiths History of Greece , page 32 . ) Well , I suppose I might as well turn to authentic history ; examination takes in all . Let me see . Persian Invasion . Xerxes had , but here my room-mate s voice interrupted me . Say chum , suppose you stop entertaining me thusly . I cant get one of these stupid problems through my stupid head . I wish now one of the genii would step out of Arabian Nights , and serve me a turn . Do stop your nonsense , I replied politely , and lowered my head to the table before me and commenced study i...

NATURAL HISTORY . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1874

NATURAL HISTORY . Being desirous of doing something for the great cause of struggling Humanity , and especially the agricultural district of the population of the United States and vicinity ; ( Right here by way of parenthesis , I wish to remark that I am seriously agriculturally inclined , and that the animal who accepts , must do so upon those conditions : -- don t all apply at once , ) and further advance this science ; and by the request of many prominent friends who would be highly gratified to see their names in print ; and . wishing to establish myself and thereby secure the professorship of the department , I have been induced , by a small consideration , to furnish a few articles for the leading presses of the country upon the all-important subject of Natural History , which articles are mere extracts from a more extensive work that will be forthcoming from the printers hands at the earliest possible day . Owing to previous engagements -- previous engagements are always gre...

THE UNIVERSITY . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1874

THE UNIVERSITY . UNIVERSITY TIME . The progress of the civil day at the University is marked by a clock on the second floor of the main building , at the head of the main stairway , while the hours of the college day are announced by a bell , hanging one hundred feet high in the bell tower , and in charge of the janitor . In default of a satisfactory answer to the self-suggesting question WHAT TIME DO WE RUN BY ? the possibilities of the case may be canvassed . There are five places whose time might be used ; Urbana , Indianapolis , Champaign , Chicago and the Illinois Industrial University . Being in the first it would be natural to go by its time , but we are not aware that it has its own time or any direct method for obtaining it ; Indianapolis time is , however , brought to Urbana by the wires of the I . B . & W . R . R . Then , as we are equally near the third , with many students living there , we might take Champaign time if it had any , but the time there used co...

REPUDIATION . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1874

REPUDIATION . At the regular meeting of the board of supervisors , for Champaign county , Illinois , a motion was made to levy the usual tax for the payment of the annual interest on the bonds , given by the county to the State to secure the location of the University . This motion was lost by a vote of eight een to nine , the majority holding that , according to the decision of the Supreme Court , in the case of the State Reform School in Livingston County , the bonds were illegal . At a subsequent special meeting , the vote stood fifteen to twelve against the payment . In the mean time the people of the county generally expressed themselves willing to pay the interest whether obliged to or not , but an opinion had been officially obtained from Judge Terry , of Danville , Illinois , pronouncing the illegality of the bonds , hence the second action of the board . Not satisfied , however , citizens who considered the honor of the county and the welfare of the University at stake , se...

DEPARTMENT OP HORTICULTURE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1874

DEPARTMENT OP HORTICULTURE . FOREST-TREE PLANTATION . —Twenty acres are set apart for an experimental forest-tree plantation on the grounds of the University . The following is taken from the forthcoming report of H . K . Vickroy . Kinds panted : Green Ash , White Ash , Catalpa , Chestnut , White Elm , European Larch , White Maple , Osage Orange , Austrian Pine , Scotch Pine , White Walnut , White Willow , White Pine , Norway Spruce and Sugar Maple . They are planted two by four feet apart , except the Pines which are four by four feet . This closeness of planting is deemed essential to secure an upright and regular growth . The Chestnuts have been a complete failure . A few left in the nursery and protected by other trees are doing well . The larvae of the May beetle seriously injured them in the plantation . The European Larch , so far , have not been satisfactory . They , too , were injured by the May beetle larvae . These , especially , need to be planted close together , for , ...

BUBBLES . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1874

BUBBLES . VACATION AT THE I . I . U . -- While the greater and more fortunate part of the students spent the holidays at home with admiring friendsand fond parents , about fifty forlorn youths languished in the desolate confines of the Bastile . It is in their behalf that we publish this as a minority report . To enumerate the desperate attempts they made to amuse themselves , in absence of their usual stimulants -- studies -- would tax our ingenuity too severely . Whether leaves on the strand entered largely into their daily life , is not for us to say . Sociables they haunted not much , they were too poor . But a few enterprising spirits prevented monotony from hovering like a night-mare upon their souls . A series of social dances were organized . The first grand ball of the season took place on Christmas eve , in room 23 , Old Building . It had continued about an hour , when the Prof , in charge , came upon the scene , and required them to ask his permission to continue , which ...
