: Editorial Notes [Newspaper Article] — National Rural and Family Magazine — 3 November 1898

: Editorial Notes —To show what kind-of beef our contributor , Mr . 7 L . H . Kerrick , makes , we quote from a private business letter : I have a much better picture of a load of cattle sold shortly after the show ( Coliseum , Chicago , 1897 ) , on our farm here . I sold them at the farmto parties-who came all the way from Buffalo : to buy . them : for six cents gross , they paying the freight to Buffalo . I stood the other ordinary charges , commission , yardage , etc ., and took Buffalo weight , the cattle being handled in the way agreed upon , which insured me a very moderate shrinkage . Tlfts was the highest price paid to any , man , as far as I know , in the United States last year for a load of cattle . —We expected Dr . Francis , professor-of-veterinary science in the State Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas , to prepare an article 011 Texas fever for this number of the National Rural . PUBLIC AFFAIRS . [Newspaper Article] — National Rural and Family Magazine — 3 November 1898

PUBLIC AFFAIRS . Edited by Gen . C . H . Howard . To Our Old Readers . Since 1 SG 5 . when published at Detroit , Mich ., ¦ this paper has heen known as the Western Rural . Detroit was then out West . , To keep -in touch with its name and the westward movement of the course of empire , in 1868 it was removed to Chicago Jwhich was then opt West . ; The term western no longer expresses its field , however , as out West now means Denver . Ogden or California , while Chi- . ca go is the center of the nation . Better to express its scope , therefore .-we have changed its name to the National Rural and Family Magazine . ; This nauie appropriately suggests its field , which is the nation * and its mission , which is to keep its readers informed in all that Ms best and progressive in rural affairs and supply the family with a weekly magazine of good things for the household . ¦ , While there has been a slight change in name , and a . step forward for the line of progressive journalsm , ther...

The Trend of Prices . [Newspaper Article] — National Rural and Family Magazine — 3 November 1898

The Trend of Prices . As shown by our index table of the average prices of 20 staple products of the farm , the trend of the market for the past week has been downward , although , in the face of a larger yield throughout the world , the average prices . of these 20 staples , as this table shows , are much higher than for . the corresponding week . of last , year . This is dueto the large increase in the circulating medium in this country and in Europe , which , in this country alone , not counting bank . discounts , for the year amounts to over $ 2 . 00 per capita or about . 11 per cent , and with the increase in bank credits , which largely take the place of currency , to about $ 3 . 50 per capita . , -.. • The foreign bank statement for the week shows a strong tendency towards contraction . The Bank of England shows an increase in the stock of bullion on hand amounting to £ -164 , 000 ; also an increase in the specie reserve fund amounting to £ 606 , 000 , and an increase in . th...

Speculator Becomes Writer . [Newspaper Article] — National Rural and Family Magazine — 3 November 1898

Speculator Becomes Writer . J OSEPH LEITER . who exploited the wheat market last spring to the amusement of-the country ,. and , finally , to his o \ vn / hurt , or that of his rich . father , has been induced to write on Wheiit for , the . Cosmopolitan Magazine . It will be borne in mind that Leiter s purchases , in an attempt to bull the market , were for a long time transactions in real wheat . No one can complain of this sort of business , whether on the Board of Trade or elsewhere . It does not contain the element or gambling . Any man . who can buy wheat , hold it at his pleasure andisell it at agood figure to be shipped abroad , is doing a friendly act to the farmers . It is said that in acquiring the experience which fitted him so well to write this magazine article Joe Leiter spent $ 5 , 000 , 000 or so .
