A ROMANCE [Newspaper Article] — Express — 23 November 1895

A ROMANCE . IN REAL LIFE , A SKBTCH Ol * THE LIFE OF . . . HARYNEELY Mary Neely was the fourth of a family of ten children , born to William and Margaret ( Patterson ) Neely , near the French Broad river in the state of South Carolina , on the 20 th day of August , 1761 . Her parents were of Irish and Welch extraction . At what date they came to America is not known , or whether or not they were born in South Carolina , neither is it material as the subject of this sketch . Mary seemed to be a great favorite of her fathers , but in that early day , schools were scarce and books were few , and nothing like system was attempted in what few schools there were in the rural districts , and owing to circumstances that followed , six weeks were all the schooling she ever had . Her early days were spent as were most of those hardy pioneers , in carding and spinning wool and flax , and in assisting the men in their endeavors to make a living for the family . She was just past her 18 th birth...

Ships and Dynamite . ( [Newspaper Article] — Express — 23 November 1895

Ships and Dynamite . ( The powerlessness of an ordinary navy is apparent from recent experiments in explosives . It is stated that dynamite cartridges can be throwfl in such a way that no warship could hold out against them . While this is \ mdoubtedly true , the question arises : How can we get along without a navy of some sort ? It is not to be supposed that having- guns of such tremendous power will tend to demoralize naval armament . It will , however , niake this portion of our defenses less useful and effective than heretofore . It will probably do away with the enormously heavy and unwieldly ironclad and favor the introduction of faster and lighter craft . Ships of war will carry smaller guns and lighter equipment generally , and depend more on quickness of movement and strategy than on the great bulk and resistive power of the ordinary monitor . It is a great pity that intelligent Christian lands can not find some other way to settle their differences than by such terrific s...
