^ 1 ^ ¦ - ¦ WctmaaA 8-aggwtipBi fer March . . * . Theflrst of March , over a large portion of our coniitry , was made memorable by a remarkably severe storm . In some sections all the month will be of such disagreable weather \ tbat but little out-door form work \ can be done . In other parts of . the country where OM paper circulates plowing , harrowing , and even seeding will be actively begun . In all places , however , enough will be found to keep the industrious fermer well employed . .. ; . [[ . - .. There are doubts and forebodings in the minds of some as to onr financial condition ; some are apprehensive we max have a grand break up . We do . not expect this . AGRICULTURAL . I [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 7 March 1868

AGRICULTURAL . I Selection ! mtta CmawMatloMAn Unsound Platform . In THE WESTERN RURAL of 15 th of February , is a report of the discussion by the Executive Committee of the Michigan State Agricultural Society , In regard to a proposition to offer a premium for the best bull of any age or class . As this is , as you say , an unusual course , perhaps you will give place to the fallowing comments upon it , taken from the Lansing , Mich ., Republican . In addition to the objections named in the subjoined article , In regard to the difficulty of judging animals at an early age , another important point connected with the matter deserves notice , viz ., that the condition of calves of beef breeds and those of dairy breeds may be widely different . In the former , the high condition Indicative of a propensity to fatten at an early age is considered a merit , while in the latter it is positively objectionable . The breeders of Ayrshires and Alderneys , or Jerseys , carefully avoid developi...

J At the age of five the horse has a complete set of permanent teeth , and after that period his age is determined by the appearance of wear which the teeth present . Nothing has been said as to the development of the molar or back teeth ; these teeth are twenty-four In number , viz : Twelve in the upper and twelve in the low * - er jaw ; but for practical purposes it is unnecessary to describe the periods at which they appear , as a horse s age can be determined with a sufficient degree of certainty / without examining them . There are four tushes and twelve incisor teeth , so that the horse has forty teeth , and mares , in whom the tushes do not develop , have thirty-six teeth . . . / . Bach incisor tooth has a 11 ttie cavity in its centre , termed...

HORTICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 7 March 1868

HORTICULTURAL | Votes and Suggestions for Much . Altiough dnring the greater part of this month the soU of the garden may be too wet to admit of its preparation for the seed of vegetables , etc ., a great deal of work may be done in various ways , in order to have everything that can be done now prevented from interfering with more important work at another time . WOE IN THE ORCHARD . In the orchard the trees shonld be closely examined to see if mice have girdled the trunks . Sometimes trees have been girdled and yet , on account of the accumulation of dead leaves and grass around tne trunks , the injury has not been perceived until it could not be remedied . Millions of dollars are lost annually by the depredations of mice and rabbits in orchards , although a little precaution might have prevented all this damage . Bandages of cloth or stiff paper , smeared with some offensive wash , will prevent damage by these pests . In manv cases awash without any bandage has been found suffici...
