Breaking Corn Roots , Kill -ing Mustard , Tennessee Notes , Seed Selection , Miscellany . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 October 1906

Breaking Corn Roots , Killing Mustard , Tennessee Notes , Seed Selection , Miscellany . FABM EXPERIENCES . By Daniel W . Bill . A PAET of my pasture started up thickly to white pine . I cut them up on ten acres and let one acre grow up to timber . In twenty years the one acre left was worth more than the ten acres cut over . A neighbor cleared up five acres and . raised a crop of winter wheat . Soon after it started up thickly to white pine . In forty-two years he sold the timber standing for $ 200 an acre . Conclusion : Let the young pines grow unless the land is very valuable for other purposes . THICK OB THIN PLANTING . I planted two acres of corn for ensilage with a machine , putting the kernels two inches apart . One acre I thinned out to six inches . The acre thinned out made more and much better ensilage than the acre not thinned . BUILDING : A SILO . When I built my silo I did not pnt paper between the boarding and had poor ensilage . Then I coated it with paper and put on a...

' CURRENT COMMENT . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 October 1906

CURRENT COMMENT . THE most interesting topic of the month has been the Cuban question . The unforunate disposition of the Cubans always has and probably always will prevent them from maintaining a istftbjffigoverirnient . The first three years passed pleasantly under the supervision of the United States govfeYrin . ent . The last four - years the Cubans have been trying to govern themselves and it * looked for a time as though their efforts would succeed , but there is a little too much pepper in their make-up and they have been unable to hold themselves down . FARM PRESS COMMENT . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 October 1906

FARM PRESS COMMENT . How to Select a Calf , Water Sup . ply , Corn , Experiment Stations , Kale and Sunflowers . A little good hard sense is bound up in the following short story taken from the Farm Journal : It takes a pretty smart farmer to know a good calf when he sees It . It ls half the battle to pick out one tbat will be a good one to raise : Tell you how we do it at our house : First , we pick out the father and mother—that goes a good way . Yon cant expect gilt-edged calve : from poor stock . Then we look the calf over pretty carefully when he first gets around to do business . In due course of time we want him to be strong enough to get up alone , and start in to make a living for himself . If he can not do that , no use to try to save him . We look at his teeth . We want him to have a full set of teeth . The calf that has not at least six teeth that are all cut through ls not very apt to have much vitality . And then we like to have the calves we raise from our own dairy h...

Dairy Hints , Milking Machines , Hog Cholera , Meat Shops Abroad , Beef Production . DAISY HINTS THAT HELP . By E . L . Vincent . ,, J DONT see why you should get X more for your butter than I do for mine . My cows are as good as yours . I take lots of pains in making my butter , and still , you always get a cent or two more than I do . I dont see into it . But if the man that said that could really get into the place of the man that beats him , he mig ht see some things that would open his eyes . Let s step in this morning and take a peep into the mysteries of butter-making as carried on by the man who always takes the top price . On that man s farm you will not see cooking , baking , washing and buttermaking all going on at the same time , and in the same room . There is a separate room for the milk and dairy utensils .
