The Rush of Prosperity . v , More than Eight Billions of Money for the Farms—How Farm Prosperity Awakens Industry and Starts the Wheels of Commerce—The tj Response of the Great Trades to the Call of Good Times—The Choice Speculation of Commerce . 5 Reprint by permission of Doubleday Page & Co ., from World s Work . There is a bureau in Washington which bears the name of Division of Information , Bureau of Immigration , Department of Commerce and Labor . In spite of the tangled nomenclature , it is a simple concern . Its main business in life is to answer questions from people and concerns that want labor and cannot find it in the ordinary way . Very recently , a request came in from a brick-malting plant in Missouri , asking the department to furnish fifteen families , and stipulating that all the families had to have children . The men . who handle these things in the department started an investigation to find out what the children were wanted for , and determined not ...

The Berkshire Forecast for the New Year [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
The Berkshire Forecast for the New Year Editor Berkshire World . Dear Sir : —As to your opinion regarding the future out look for Berkshires , judging from the many inquiries we are getting and the sales we are making the out look is very bright . I thoroughly believe that the future for high class Berkshires is as good as it ever was . We have been passing through a reaction due to the high prices of recent years ; many of which were large figures for medium animals , and in some instances these large prices were only on paper . I do not believe that exorbitant prices do the breed any good . The Berkshire breeder producing the right kind of Berkshires need have no fear of the future ; as I am thoroughly convinced that the Berkshire hog is the best for the farmer and feeder . The number of registered animals in the United States is very small compared to the number of hogs . I believe the future will see an increased demand for all classes of registered stock , but to secure our sha...
The Demand Much Greater Than I Ever Knew It . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
The Demand Much Greater Than I Ever Knew It . Raleigh , N . C , The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —In regard to Berkshires I am glad to report the demand for Berkshires is much greater than , I ever knew it . I cannot fill all my orders . It may be owing to the fact that I am using the highest class of Berkshires to be obtained , as you can see from my breeding stock . I have Premier Duke 51 st 107603 , a son of one of the World s Champions , Premier Longfellow 68600 , who sold for $ 2 , 000 . Premier Duke 51 st 107603 is out of a daughter of the mighty Lord Premier 50001 , who weighed in breeding condition 890 pounds , and sold for $ 1 , 500 when more than six years old . I also have Longfellow s Rival 4 th 118624 , he being a son of Rival s Lord Premier 113110 ; he by Lord Premier s Rival 92805 , another champion of the breed , $ 10 , 000 is said to have been refused for him . The dam of Longfellow s Rival 4 th 118624 , is Longfellow s Duchess 5 th , a daughter...
Local Trade Encouraging [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
Local Trade Encouraging Millersburg , Ohio . The BerkshireWorld , Springfield . 111 . Dear Editors : —Agreeable to your request I will endeavor to explain the present and future outlook for Barkshires in our community and State . The present outlook is very promising as many neighbors and new distant people are buying good Berkshire , brood sows . My calls are mostly from home people which is indeed very encouraging to me as well as good business prospects . This is important as it seems to me that peopi- are taking an interest in their fellow men which is Godlike and encouraging and I am positive if we , as breeders , are doing likewise to our customers the business will increase and Berkshires will become more numerous in our community and State . I think we have a very good future prospect if we only do our part to the trade and also to breed our hogs right , feed them so that they will develop into the right kind of individuals and positively market the culls . Yours respectfull...
But One Answer to the Question [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
But One Answer to the Question mL „ Bennington , Mich . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —It would seem to me that there was but one answer that could be given to this question ; that the outlook for Berkshires was never better than it is for the year 1910 . With the year 1909 , just closing which Has been one of the greatest years on record for the Berkshire and with the fact before us that the Berkshire is champion of all breeds of hogs for the general use and the most profitable or ail as a money maker to the breeder and feeder , the future prospect for mgh prices in the pork product , and the increased consumntion of the same , U would seem to me that there was never a better outlook for Berkshires than , at present . It has been my Pleasure to meet breeders and feeders irom nearly all parts of our own State and many others in the past four months and in every instance they report a good demand for Berkshires and in most cases they report the demand in advan...
"Think of 8 c Pork on December 20 th !" [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
Think of 8 c Pork on December 20 th ! Lima , Ohio . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —We sold about the last of our unusual large crop of fattening hogs December 20 th for 8 cents per pound . These were cull pure-bred Berkshires and grade hogs and the price mentioned is a net price at the farms . Think of 8 cent pork on December 20 th ! And right now the dealers want to contract February pork at 9 cents , and yet the knowing ones say hogs will be still higher another year . Why ? Simply because the law of supply and demand is a very large factor in determining the price of commodities . The pork supply is short for at least two valid reasons ; ( 1 ) farmers fattened their brood sows or got rid of them as best they could , rather than feed 80 cent corn last year . That made the number of pigs farrowed less than normal ; ( 2 ) an increased amount of pork is being consumed from year to year . Certainly the price of fattening hogs can not get down to a normal figure...
Great Shortage in Bred Sows and Gilts . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
Great Shortage in Bred Sows and Gilts . Salem , Ohio . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —In this part of Ohio pigs and brood sows are very hard to find . I have inquiries almost daily for some pigs to put in the place of the hogs that are slaughtered by the farmers . There certainly will be a famine on pigs and brood sows . 1 have sold all of my sows to my neighbors and will have to buy some bred sows . I have four sows that 1 think are near good ones . I have one litter of seven , six of them boars , from a sow sired by Rival s Lord Premier and one litter from a sow by Longfellow Premier C , four of them boars , all sired by Premier Belle Duke 3 d 105323 , he by Premier Longfellow and dam by Lord Premier , who has proven himself one of the best breeders in America taking into account the quality of sows he has . He sires uniform Utters from different typed sows . These boars are for sale , farrowed September 1 , 1909 . Yours truly , W ,. W . Burns .
The Berkshire and the Holstein Lead . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
The Berkshire and the Holstein Lead . Delmar , N . 5 f . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —It occurs to me that the Berkshire hog stands . among the many breeds of hogs as the Holstein cow does among its kind . She is a great beautiful 1 animal , large in size , a wonderful producer and of strong constitution , resisting disease and sudden climatic changes . So also is the Berkshire hog , a great and beautiful animal 1 , large in size and a wonderful producer , with a constitution which resists desease and withstands the abuse they are too often subjected to in poorly ventilated or too airy quarters . The future of the breed seems to be assured bv the law of the survival of the fittest . In this immediate vicinity I seem to be the only champion of the breed . I have the satisfaction , however , of having all comers admire and praise my pig family . In the last three years I have had fifty-one pigs ( not a large herd , but all I wanted ) and have never had a sick...

Never Bri ghter Before Millersburg , Ohio . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Very truly yours , M . J . Drushel .
More Farmers Using Berkshires [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1910
More Farmers Using Berkshires Clinton , Wis . The Berkshire Wprld , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —Regarding the future outlook for Berkshires will say I dont think it was ever better than it is now . More farmers are using Berkshire boars all over the country than every before and they will always come back for another one . I have started several farmers right near me with pure bred Berkshire sows and boars within the last year . My sales have doubled this year and at better prices . I have sold over forty head so far this year for breeding purposes mostly right at home and they have averaged $ 20 per head right through , big and little , besides what I have sold on the market . My Berkshires are doing fine . I am breeding fourteen sows to farrow next spring to Burwood Lee , Majestic Masterpiece and Wild Rose Star . I am very near sold out of sow stuff , but have some good fall boars left . I think The Berkshire World is a good booster for the breed and long may it live to do go...
