With this the first issue of the Inde- MtNCENT, we present our compliments tc the rending public and request their indulcrr.ee wile we engage in the usual preliminary egotism. We arc aware that the journalistic field in this fair portion of our Territory is not altogether unexplored, and that scattered over its surface may be seen the vestiges of others who have preced ed us In enterprises like our own, but who failing to gather the harvest they deemed sufficient remuneration for the labor expended, have sought elsewhere a field for the employment of their gen ius. Whatever of failute they may have sustained we do not think it chat gable to a want of patronage, for certainly the people of this section have always stood ready to s.tpport a good paper. And believing they will be quick to ap preciate and ready to reward true mer it, we do not hesitate to solicit their aid in our newspaper enterprise. Tb<" Independent...

Louis .s an active young fellow, but he must keep his weather eye open up the river if he don't want to be found when thr- whistle blows, like Sheridan "twenty miles away." Notwithstanding all the predictions the ferry is still running and doing a good business. It is stated that a new ferry will supersede the one now on the route. $fcc ginflfpfniicMt SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30, Ist:,. City vs. t'otinty. It is a matter of regret that the inter ests of city and county should be made to conflict, A division of thought, feel ing or effort between city and county can only work disastrously to the in terests of both. In this new and com paratively undeveloped country there is the greater need that all efforts should be united, and that the public policy should be in accordance with the fund amental idea ol' our form of govern ment—"the greatest good to the great est number." lie who would work with any object beyond this is, inno cently, perhaps, because ignorant ly, working for a public evil.
