The Ellensburg Dawn Supplement Vol. 5- FOUNDED THE W. C T. U. To Mrs. McClellan Brown Be longs the Honor. Many persons have been speak ing of Miss Francis Willard as the founder of the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union. The founder at the W. C. T. U. resides in this city. Mrs. McClellan Brown was instrumental in calling the first convention, inaugurating the movement in Columbus in Febru ary, 1874, and in August following she went to Chautauqua rssetnbly with a full plan of organization, which she had incorporated by a committee from various states present at that assembly. By her correspondence the first convention was called at Cleveland in Novem ber, 1874, where Miss Willard first entered the work and was made secretary of the convention Mrs. Brown at that time declined the nomination for the presidency. Mrs. Anna Wittenmyer, of Phil adelphia, was president for five years preceeding Miss Willard's succession to the presidency in 1879. Mrs. Brown whs in 1874 the right wo...

The Cap of IJbertj. From very early times nue of the dis Anguishing marks of a slave, both in Greece and oriental countries generally, was the lack of any covering for tho head. Accordingly tho cap came to be considered the insignia of liberty, and when slaves were given their freedom they were presented with a cap as an emblem of it. In Sparta the helots wore a cap of dogskin and this was reckoned a badge of servitude, hut uron gaining their freedom this was replaced by a cap of a different material, of another ibape and ornamented with flowers. A similar custom was observed in Rome, where the presentation of the pilcns or cap was always a part of the ceremony of manumitting a slave; hence arose the proverb, "Servos ad pilenm vo care." Also on medals the cap is the symbol of liberty and is usually repre sented as being held in the right hand by the point. When n cap was exposed to the people's view on the top of a spear, as in the case of the conspiracy against Ca?sar, it was inten...
