Having been trought up on a farm, I used to hear much aid b farmersin regard to the "best time" fur cutting bushes, &c, and remember well the many uncer tainties that existed, and the various opinions giv en on the subject. t i DEMOCRAT AND SENTINEL. LOCAL ITEMS. A rrsvr seitch op rcssr things. For more than a week, (if thus we may speak,) our town has been lively and gay; for parties and fun have been on the run, and are running full up to this clay. Vie had "ton grand toiree," which was brim full of glory, at which some were dressed all for show ; one was rin ged a la Turk, one carried a dirk, and one was a pay Scottish beau. A dark eyed Senora tripped light o'er (lie floor ah, or clung to a Welch Grenadier; and Sam Slick, vvc guess, mixed up with the mess, with i-locks that were not a bit dear. An old woman was there, with white silvered hair, who was busy at knitting a Mocking; and a dandy in tights, sehotrisrhod lli.it night, and jana!ivcli " looked quite shocking. A Liir one as ': night " was tripping so linbt. and - taking all down "! by surprize; but her " stars "' vainly shone, for they were outdone by the bright sparkling glance if her eyes. Agricultural. N Late Sown Vegetables. Sonic of the latest delicacies for table use may to obtained from quite late sowings. "Ve can speak most positively in regarb to turnips. Both the round and the flat turnip may be sown at any time in July or August, and we have known it to come to considerable maturity in a season in which there were no early frosts, when sown in the first week of September. Special VAms should betaken to enrich the soil, tor in this way wc secure two objects the more rapid growth of the plant, and a sweeter and more tender vegetaMe. We suppose it is generally well known that the more rapid the growth of this and several other vegetables, the more mild and tender they are to the taste. Cabbages, onions, radishes, spinach, cauliflower, are all much more delicate in flavor, and agreeable to the palate when grown freely and rapidly than when their growth is stinted or slow. Cucumbers and celery may be also added to the above named, as "being much milder when grown ...

We have boon informed . . . . iv. l l. t Ci melancholy ana latai amur , mc-i wuurreu mar the Sumniit recently, the particulars of w hich arc as f jIIows : A man, whose name we did not hear, felt symp toms of Ague and remarked, to the keeper of a Grocery St ore that he would "give almost any thing to prevent an attack of the disease." The Grocer replied that he would cure him, and there- upon gave him a quantity of Tartar emetic, which lie took and went home. The dose was entirely too great, and he was prostrated at once from its effects. Dis. Jackson and Howe were sent for, hut before they reached him he was dead. This should prove a warning to persons who are in the habit of administering medicines by random. Human life is too precious to be idly tampered with, and none should attempt to deal out poisonous or dangerous drugs but those who are familiar with their proortics and effects.
