I cannot bear Thv long protracted stay; 8o sad and lonley U my heart When thou art far away! I've tried alas! how vainly tried! Thine absence to forget; Yet still I ean but think of thee With fondness and regret. As mourns the gentle, cooing dove, In accents desolate, When forced by some unkindly hand Far from her loving mate through the chambers of my heart Echoes a mournful tone, Whilst every pulse affections beats, Re-echoes "I'm alone!" 'Tilings that are bright when thou art here, Look dark and gloomy now; And nature seems to share my grief, With clouds upon her brow. Editor. PLYMOUTH, IND. Thursday Morning, Jan., 3, 1856, A HAPPY NEW YEAR Tu our patrons and friends and "the rest of mankind. Old Time for 1855, went uit with a terrible struggle gathering around him snow and ice, covered with hoar-frost for a funeral pile, he seemed to pass into a state of collapse that left the surface devoid of all life for days before hour come, and passed away like a victim t.f malignant cholera, Well, be has see n j enough during the past year to make him shudder, and the blood freeze in his veins, and he has witnessed as Strang things aa the sun 'ver shone upon. He has seen an alliance of England and France, which the great Emperor Napole on said could never take place except to keep Russia from Constantinople, and even that alliance would ultimately lead to the expul sion from India bytthosc same Russians. Napoleon was right, doubtless, aüd we shall see. He has seen carnage, suffering and death; grinding ambition about Sebastopol to make good men weep and hy...

From the Chicago Time?, Nov. 2j Incident in Heal Life. During the past week we have been much employed m the Recorder's Court. We witnessed the narrow escape from the penitentiary by a boy, whoso age, or want of age, did not permit him to receive the sentence which would have been awarded to an older offender. It brought vividly to our mind a scone we saw in the same room before the same court but a very short time since, the principal actor in which, having since been removed beyond all means of discovery, there exists no longer any delicacy forbidding its publicity. Near a small town, in one of the southern counties of Michigan, some months ago, lived a respectable and well to do firmer, named Jackson; he owned and occupied a well stocked firm, which by years of pa tient industry he had brought to a state of great productiveness and profit. He had four sons, strong, hearty, honest, upright fellows, to all of vhom on arrivinir at their majority he had given an interest in tin yield...

i From Sloans Garden City. . Tha Love of Brothers and Sisters. Tis said: "The heart was forme J for lore;" And nothing but that power Csa e'er its yearnings satisfy, In Melancholy's hour. But in this cold, unfriendly world, Where shall we look for !v? Where shall we find that heavenly boon, That blessing from above? In youth's gay morn perhaps you find A being call him friend He saith that thus to you he'll prove. Until your life shall end. But often tiives he proves a foe, A bitter one to thee; And, though he smiles, and smiles agnin, A t ilium he may be. But oh! around the fireside Abides a holy charm ; Where brothers and sisters loving meet. Whose hearts arc ever warm.
