The Crops. From the Courier-Journal.] The cotton area under cultiva tion at present is reported by the various cotton exchanges and by the Department of Agriculture in percentages which would amonnt to about b,960U,UU to b,L075,t000 acres, against 93,250,000 acres in 1875. The crop was planted a few days later than the last, and there has also been more rain in som01e sections than was needed. The eondition of the crop is conse qluently reported less favorable than at the corresponding date of last year. The food crops were probably never more promising, and the present prospects are that the yield of all the earlier cereals will be the largest known. Of the late cereals, such as carn, it can be only known that the acreage is of the largest breadth. There are hazards surrounding them all, but the situation was never more gratifying. The Cahfornia wheat exports will be about 210,000 tons larger than last year, a gain of nearly fifty per cent. So far, there is no crop of which we have...

J. M. SWEENEY, EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR. Satmrdmy, July eS, ltt16. The Indian War. We make up the following arti cle on this subject, from the offi cial report of General Custer's engagement with the Indians. The recent disaster which befel a part of the Seventh Regular Cavalry, led by General Custer, is believed to be true. For some reaseon, yet unexplained, General Custer, who commanded, and had been detach ed by his commander, General Terry, at the mouth of the Rose bud, to make a wide detour up the Rosebud tributary to the Yellow stone, across to the Little Horn river, and down to the mouth of the Big Horn-the place agreed on for the meeting-attacked, en route, a large Indian village, with only a part of his force, having himself detached the rest, with a view of intercepting the retreat of the savages, and experienced an utter annihilation of his immediate command. The forces of Generals Terry an: Gibbon reached the field of battle the next day, and rescued fifty-two wounded men, ...

Management of Children. There can, we think, be no greater disaster in the home, no greater mistake in the attempt to manage a family, than the failure of the two parents to mnake their authority absolutely one. TLh household in which, from any reo: son or from any cause, a coinlict of authority exists, is the saddest of sights to one who wihes well to children. There should be earnest conference betweyn pa rents concerning the ,-lit methods and objects; there should be per feet unanimity in the 'neral sys tem of management adopted by them. It is unspe1fknlly better to nmake some mistakes in unison, than to lot the minds of children get confused as to whom they shall obey. Let the father and mother speak with one voice, if they wiit the voice of cither to be respected. Appeals from one to the other should neveor be permit ted. Wh'ere this is allowed, wretchedness; of many kinds; en nsues, and management gives place to mismanagement. What Is a Gentleman ? In an address to the Leeds Y...

-ehc iolfa (COlronitlr J. M. SWEENEY, EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR. Saturday, July 29, I%7.6. To Candidates, and Others. The columns of the CIHuONCLE arc taken up with communications from persons of both political par ties-certainly, they are of a local character, and tend to 'ma.le our' paper of great interest to the peo ple of this District and parish; but we never started the paper for the purpose of being a n;ediuL thro' which would-be office-holders (or their friends) could bring them selves before the people. We are an independent journal, and in tend to be one, and we want both parties to have the use of our columns, in a legitimate way, to as great an extent as we can; but, gentlemen, wz have a right. The candidate should announce him self through our columns, under our heading of "Candidatas' An nouncements," subject to the nom ination of his party, and if he is no party man, and thinks he can reach the goal desired, because of his popularity-why, he has the same privilege. We ar...

L e (5olfar ronirctle J. M. SWEENEY, EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR. Saturday, August 5. 176. Unjust Slander of Grant Parish. The tendency of the press, as well as individuals whose political prejudices actuate them to pro nounce unjust sentences and slan 'derous libels upon this community, under cover of sportsmen's items, or other news, appears as strong as ever. A New Orleans paper publishes an account of a quarrel, at Colfax, between Casey and Masters, and the wounding of the latter by the former. Of course, the impression thus conveyed, is not lost to the! imagination of slander-loving peo ple, and each gossipper, after adding the weight of his own tes tiaolly in the light of his own precocious lens, is ready to mag nify the mythical "mole-hill into a mountain." In justice to the par ties named, and to our community at large, it becomes our duty to correct that report. The facts are these, which were reported to us at the time. Instead of being at Colfax, the matter occurred about thirt...
